On the UN’s International Day for Universal Access to Information, research group Geoengineering Monitor has launched an updated and information-packed new website on global climate engineering proposals. It serves as an up-to-date and extensively-researched resource of critical information on geoengineering for policy-makers, journalists and civil society groups, and builds on over 15 years of online publications.
The website features detailed information on each of the main geoengineering technologies, a world-wide map with over 1,700 different listed projects and guest articles by key figures in geoengineering advocacy work, including community activists and renowned environmentalists. It also has an extensive Spanish language version, making it the largest source of online information on geoengineering in Spanish.
Geoengineering Monitor is a collaboration between ETC Group, the Heinrich Boll Foundation and Biofuelwatch. ETC Group’s Latin American Director Silvia Ribeiro described how “Geoengineering Monitor fulfils a unique role by bringing together and making accessible civil society analysis and critical scientific perspectives on climate engineering. This is vital for the communities being impacted by geoengineering schemes, the decision-makers who need to be well informed about these issues and indeed everyone concerned about how climate change is being responded to.”
Linda Schneider, International Climate Policy Director at the Heinrich Boell Foundation, added: “Geoengineering Monitor is needed now more than ever—as big polluters increasingly turn to technofix climate solutions we need easy access to up-to-date and accurate information on geoengineering technologies and where they are being tested and deployed.”
The website has also just published a hard-hitting guest article by award-winning environmentalist Dr Vandana Shiva, whose most recent work looks at false solutions to climate change such as geoengineering. Dr. Shiva stated that “The Earth is a living organism which regulates her climate. Climate change is a metabolic disorder of the living Earth, as I write in my new book “Nature of Nature.” Geoengineering is a crime against Mother Earth, and against her people. This reckless ecocidal experimentation must stop.“
On Geoengineering Monitor’s upcoming publications, Gary Hughes, Americas Program Coordinator for Biofuelwatch, said: “We’ll be publishing a number of key pieces of new content over the coming weeks, including an in-depth exposé of efforts to impose solar geoengineering research onto research institutions in the Global South, and technology updates on Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) schemes such as Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage. Journalists and everyone else wanting to stay up-to-date should keep a close eye on Geoengineering Monitor.”
